Mountaineers Recycle

The Program

DSCN0539 The Mountaineers Recycle Program started in 2007 with a grant from the state of West Virginia’s REAP Program and cooperation between the WE CAN program, WVU Facilities Management, the Center for Civic Engagement, and the Monongalia County Solid Waste Authority. Mountaineers Recycle volunteers distribute recycling kits to fans and tailgaters in the parking lots outside the WVU football stadium. The recycling kits provide enough recycling bags for the entire season in which fans can place their empty aluminum cans and plastic bottles. Recycling also take place at stadium gates and inside via large gold cans. WVU Athletics stadium cleaners separate waste from recyclables from the stands after each game.

Accomplishments

During the 2010 season, Mountaineers Recycle(d) over 17 tons of plastic bottles and aluminum cans over 7 home games. That’s equivalent to removing 20 cars from the roadway for an entire year!
