The ProgramThe Mountaineers Recycle Program started in 2007 with a grant from the state of West Virginia’s REAP Program and cooperation between WVU Athletics, the WE CAN sustainability program, WVU Facilities Management, the Center for Service and Learning, and the Monongalia County Solid Waste Authority.
How It Works
Recycling happens inside the stadium and in WVU’s main tailgate lot, the ‘Blue’ lot. As fans enter the Blue lot, parking attendants hand them recycling kits that include trash bags and gold recycling bags, along with instructions that they recycle bottles and cans, tie off the gold bag, and leave it at their tailgate.
On stadium walkways and inside the concourse, large gold bins are provided for bottle and can recycling. WVU Athletics’ cleaning vendor recycles material from the gold bins, the Blue lot, and from a recycling ‘sweep’ made through the stands after each game.
During the 2010 season, Mountaineers Recycle(d) over 17 tons of plastic bottles and aluminum cans over 7 home games. That’s equivalent to removing 20 cars from the roadway for an entire year!
