Alumni Stormwater Pond

The Erickson Alumni Center, located on the corner of Patteson Drive and University Avenue, was built with sustainability in mind. The construction of the center included a stormwater pond (retention pond) to help the area respond to increased rainfall due to environmental changes. This album shows the pond in action.

Blue and Gold Mine Sale

The May fund raiser at Milan Puskar Stadium helped the university manage student waste left behind at the end of the year by selling one person's trash and making it another person's treasure. In 2009, the sale raised over $18,000.

Christian Missions Apparel Donation

Christian Missions is a non-profit organization that helps cloth and shelter those in need. WVU helps supply the clothing and accessories with three drop off stations on the Evansdale campus. They are located at the Rec Center, Mountaineer Station, and near Chestnut Ridge. All clothing that is not of use is then sold to textile re-manufacturers. On average, a truck load of clothing provides 200 meals. All donations are welcome.

College of Law Library

The WVU College of Law installed forty-five virtual desktop devices called thin clients. Twenty-eight monitors were installed in the George R. Farmer, Jr. Law Library and seventeen monitors in the Leo Carlin Computer Lab.

E.A.R.T.H. Day 5k

The E.A.R.T.H. Day 5k was a successful rally to educate the community about sustainability initiatives in West Virginia. Thanks to the dedication and support of the local sustainable businesses in attendance, all of the participants had a wonderful time and learned a great deal.

Earth Week

During Earth Week, WECAN raised awareness for sustainable practices and urged the community to become involved. Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers for your time and effort!

Ecolympics 2010 Green on the Green

Students gathered on the Mountainlair Green on Earth Day to celebrate and honor our planet. The event was sponsored by the WVU Office of Sustainability, WELL WVU, and the WVU Young Democrats. Many local groups such as the Sierra Student Coalition, Friends of Decker's Creek, Cafe Con Leche, WECAN, The Wildlife Society, West Virginia Raptor Rehabilitation Center, ZipCar, Society of Environmental Professionals, and many more attended the show and educated attendees on ways to be sustainable.

Mountaineers Recycle

Mountaineers Recycle is WECAN's athletic events recycling program in which West Virginia University has partnered with the Mon. County Solid Waste Authority to collect recyclables at home football games. Volunteers meet 4 hours prior to start of game and finish right before kick-off. Each volunteer receives a free t-shirt for participation. This is an excellent way to experience the football atmosphere without attending the game. Volunteers are needed for all home football games. Move-In Day Cardboard Recycling New Vision Field Trip

Sustainable Design and Development (DSGN 280) is a course offered at WVU that explores the community development aspect of sustainability. This album contains photos of a field trip to Barbour County, WV where students worked with New Vision, a local community development program that focuses on renewable energy, to build photovoltaic systems (solar panels).

oneSHIRT Clothing Drive 2010

The oneSHIRT campaign was a clothing drive during Another World is Possible week, February 22-27. Clothing was reused or recycled. Donations benefit local agencies making a difference in West Virginian communities. Over a dozen WVU student organizations, offices, local businesses, and civic groups united to collect used clothing for the campaign.

oneSHIRT Clothing Drive 2011

The oneSHIRT National Collegiate Clothing drive is a campus/community initiative that originated at WVU and has since spread to 100 plus campuses in over 40 states. The 2nd Annual oneSHIRT Clothing Drive raised approximately 2.5 tons of clothing in three days!

Photovoltaic Cell Workshop

WVU offers an array of Sustainability Workshops. The Sustainable Design Studio held a workshop to show students how to build a photovoltaic cells. These devices are used in solar panels. Jerome Tapaha and Ernie Manheimer from the Navaho Nations instructed the students on how to solder the leads to the photovoltaic cells.

Sustainability Awareness Week '11

The 2011 Sustainability Awareness Week was a remarkable success with an excess of 200 new pledges. WVU students, faculty and staff from all over campus came to learn about water and energy conservation as well as recycling. Sponsored by WVUWeCan, WVU Student Government Association, and the University's Recycling Department.

The House That WVU Built

The West Virginia University Division of Design & Merchandising has partnered with the Mon County Habitat for Humanity in an effort to fund and construct a home for a family in Morgantown, West Virginia. Design students Caitlin Carrigan and Heather Preston conceptualized the project for a design assignment given in lieu of an exam. The young ladies with the help of Design Professor, Barbara Lingle, are enlisting the help of the entire WVU campus as well as the local community to make this project a success.

Transportation Fair 2011

The 2011 Transportation Fair educated adults and children about alternative modes of transportation.

WVU & EPA Partner

On Tuesday, September 21st of 2010, WVU signed an agreement with the US Environmental Protection Agency to join the Sustainability Partnership Program. This program, with the help of the EPA, will cut down the university's negative environmental impacts and costs associated with energy consumption and waste disposal. After the signing, WVU President Clements, EPA Admin Shawn Garvin, and others were given a tour of the green roof on Brooks Hall.
